The first time the player insert character meets the woman in question, he sees her as a little girl. When she looks like a little girl, she sounds like one too. One thing I don't quite get, and maybe you anime fans in the audience can help me out here, but one of the main characters is portrayed two different ways:Ĭlick to expand.Purely visual, though the voice acting also changes. Apparently there were also some troubled crowd-funding attempts to get the English-language version launched before they finally succeeded. Apparently all the actual nudity and sex scenes from the original have been removed, with no plans to restore them according to the devs. There will apparently be five total chapters once they finish all the localization, and the whole business supposedly clocks in at over 60 hours.ĭoing a bit more digging, I found out that this was originally some kind of harem eroge thing in its original Japanese release, but has been bowdlerized significantly for the English-language Steam release. I'm about.six hours in? And this is just the first chapter. The narrator/player insert character is a high school student from the modern day who gets mysteriously transported back in time to witness and take part in the events of chushingura. There are some fantastic elements to the story. Like, I have at numerous points gained the impression that this game was written by some Japanese history geeks who thought to themselves "Hey, y'know we could teach Japanese history to a lot of unsuspecting eroge fans if we just included some big ol' titties in there somewhere!" And the narrator/player insert character often peppers his internal monologue with explanations of various practices and customs from the time. (Mind you, I am no scholar of Japanese history, so take my opinion here with a grain of salt.) There are frequent asides in the text where the game breaks the fourth wall to explain certain terms or to convert Genroku-era measurements into modern units. When I see "inexplicably female", I am reminded of a comic I saw in a thread here once, and which I cannot find now, which showed various game developers giving some obvious bullshit justification for why their female characters wear skimpy clothing and have enormous breasts, but ending with the guy who (IIRC) developed DOA just saying "I like boobs".ĭespite the "inexplicable" female nature of the samurai, and the equally inexplicable cleavage, the story appears to be a very faithful and detailed historical account of the events recounted in the chushingura, the 47 Ronin story. The story is a retelling of the 47 Ronin story, except that all of the major characters, including all the samurai, are "inexplicably female" (verbatim quote there from the developers). But damn if the story hasn't grabbed me in a way that has made me mostly ignore the fan service except in those moments where the in-story tension/suspense makes the watermelon-sized boobs and copious cleavage immensely incongruous. ![]() ![]() Now, keep in mind that I have never before read a visual novel of any kind, and have no basis for comparison. Nonetheless, it is so far a fairly gripping story.
